"Mother, Are You Worring?"
"Mother, are you worring?" Mrs. Carter was startled by this unexpected question. Standing in the doorway to the living room was five-year-old Eddie, clad in his pajamas and wearing a look on his face as though he had not a friend in the world. She had put little Eddie to bed more than an hour ago and thought that he had long since drifted off to sleep. But there he was in the doorway, wide awake and evidently troubled, eager to have an answer to his question. At a loss at first to explain what the boy meant by his unusual query, she was soon to find out what was troubling his little heart. When she had put him to bed earlier that evening, he had confided to her one of his bit little problems, for which a solution had to be found before tomorrow morning. In true mother fashion she had assured him that everything would be all right. And as she tucked him in and kissed him good night, she had said: "Now, you just go to sleep—and let Mother worry about that." An hour had passed, and the lad was not sure that his mother was keeping her promise. Was she really "worrying about that?" We may smile at little Eddie, but are not we all very much like him? The Bible invites us again and again to cast all our cares, our worries and anxieties, upon the Lord. And He assures us that He will care for us (I Peter 5:7). It is because we are spiritual children that we find it impossible to take God at His Word. How often have we stayed awake at night because we were not sure that God would keep His promise to care for us—tonight, tomorrow? Let us never-forget that God's "good night" to the praying Christian is very similar to that of Eddie's mother: "Now, you just go to sleep—and let Me worry about those problems . Herman W. Gockel Sword of the Lord A couple of years ago I made a New Year's resolution to start evangelising by sending out an email on Wednesdays to encourage Christian Living. I am going to continue sending it via email each Wednesday but also make it available here where I can add more content, and archive previous articles. Each week I will post the new message and move the old one to the blog page. You will find all of 2010 and 2011 posts on their respective pages. On Wednesday Nights various men of the South Bumby church of Christ give a 10 minute exortation, many by our young men. Check out the "Audio Clips" page and you will find my all time favorite sermon by Tom Wallace. May God continue to bless you. The Visitor
Betty Smythe Like a thief in the night you hide your presence in the most unusual ways. Your clothe yourself in darkness and desperately try to avoid light being cast on you. You make no advance reservation, nor do you send out notices of your arrival time. You most often bring with you sadness and only occasionally do you bring happiness. You rarely are a welcome visitor and your host secretly wishes you had never arrived. You are no respecter of persons, for you will visit each of us at sometime in our lives. You visit the rich, the poor, the old and young, those of every race and creed, the prepared and the unprepared. You are the most difficult visitor of all to make to feel welcome or to entertain. Your visit is often brief, for you accomplish your purpose quickly and as unexpectedly as your arrival. You always take away with you much more than you brought. You take the happiness, the beauty, the future, and the very breath of life of your host. We watch you often as you visit others, but rarely do we expect to be the next one visited. Someday will we be so prepared that we will place a welcome mat out for you-- A mat inscribed with the words, "Oh Death, where is your Victory? Oh grave, where is your Sting?" |
